1. The basic construction of pedestals for terraces

You can see the basic structure of a pedestal terrace here. Pedestals are positioned on the floor of the terrace and slabs are laid on top of them.

2. What exactly are terrace pedestals?
Pedestal supports for terraces are basically solid plastic parts that are currently mostly made from recycled polypropylene. These are always height-adjustable using a key or rotating ring.
The following graphic illustrates the structure of the pedestal supports:

On the left, you can see the assembly of our 'EasyPro' pedestal support with a double thread. Components a), b), and c) are always delivered pre-assembled.
The component a) is the pedestal base.
This base acts as a support surface and distributes the weight above into the subfloor.
The component b) and c) are internal threads Component c) also holds the pedestal head. The threads are used to make the pedestal height adjustable.
The component d) shows the pedestal head Depending on the type of pedestal, this can be permanently connected to the thread or delivered separately (for self-leveling pedestals)
3. What types of terrace pedestals are there?
We differentiate according to the type of construction in principle three types of pedestal bearings:
a) Pedestal support with fixed head
b) Pedestal support with self-leveling head
c) Pedestal supports for special applications (e.g. for raised floor constructions)
We also differentiate between terrace pedestals according to the type of surface used:
– Pedestal supports for slab coverings (porcelain stoneware, concrete blocks, natural stones)
– Pedestal supports for wood and WPC flooring
3.1 Pedestal support with fixed head
With a pedestal support with a fixed head, the pedestal support head does not move and is fixedly connected to the thread.
Therefore, the entire pedestal unit forms a height-adjustable but rigid unit.
Since the construction is simpler, these pedestals are usually cheaper than self-leveling pedestals.
✅ These pedestals are ideal when an existing gradient in the subsoil needs to be transferred to the surface!
The following picture illustrates this terrace situation: an existing gradient of 2% in the subsoil is converted into a 2% gradient in the paving slabs.

In this example, this terrace pedestal has a joint width of 2mm.
Our pedestal supports for slabs are always available in joint widths of 2mm and 4mm.

Here you can see a pedestal support with a fixed head for wooden and WPC substructures.
The pedestal head is designed differently and is used to hold and screw substructure elements.
3.2 Pedestal support with self-leveling head
With the pedestal support with self-leveling head, the heads can be moved by +/- 5% and thus allow adjustment or compensation of a slope!


These pedestals are therefore ideal for the following requirements:
- leveling a slope
- Changing a slope (e.g. from 3% slope to 2% slope)
- creating a slope
Creating a slope is an underestimated feature of the self-leveling pedestal:

4. Which pedestals are suitable for your terrace?
We distinguish between two situations on this topic:
a) Your terrace already has a slope
b) Your terrace has no or only a minimal slope
No matter what situation you find in your construction project – the following rules always apply
If you use the existing slope
– balance,
– mitigate or
– want to enlarge
please use the self-leveling pedestals!
However, if you want to transfer the existing gradient unchanged into the surface covering, please use the pedestal supports with a fixed head!
